STATE THEATRE

“SAPS AT SEA.” Uproarious fun and side-splitting laughter is provided in “Saps at Sea,” which stars Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy and which will be finally shown tonight at the State Theatre. In addition there will be presented George O’Brien in “Stage to Chino.” A “March of Time” (dealing with America and Japan) and the great air raid picture, “London Can Take It.” “ANN OF WINDY POPLARS.” Tomorrow night there will be shown at the State Theatre L. M. Montgomery’s loved novel, “Anne of Windy Poplars,” with all the charm and appeal that characterised the book. Playing the part of Anne, is beautiful Anne Shirley, whom audiences will remember as the child-Anne in “Anne of Green Gables.” Now grown up, she plays the role of an equally grown up Anne, and brings to the character from whom she took her name all the spontaneity and sensitive naturalness which has made her a star. The story deals with the adventures of Anne as a school-teacher, while she is waiting for her fiance Gilbert to build up a medical practice. She is appointed to Pringletown, where she finds all doors closed to her as the result of the hostility of the powerful Pringle family who wanted the appointment for one of their- own clan. How she succeeds in overcoming this hostility and prejudice is charmingly told in this heart-warming film.
