PRIZE=GIVING ceremony LAST NIGHT ADDRESS BY MR H. E. EVANS. WOMEN’S GREAT RESPONSIBILITY The St. Matthew’s Collegiate School assembly hall was crowded last when the annual prize-giving ceremony took place. The Ven. Archdeacon E. J Rich presided over an attendance which included visitors from-i'l’ parts of the Wairarapa. Proceedings opened with a Scripturi reading, the school hymn and "God Defend New Zealand.” On behalf ol the Board of Governors, Archdeacon Rich extended a welcome to parents and friends. He paid a tribute to the work of those responsible for the running of the college ano expressed appreciation of the work done by the Parents’ Association anc, the Old Girls' Association. Items were given by the school choir and the function concluded with the National Anthem and the pronouncing of the Benediction. "It is my sincere belief that schools like this, imparting sound learning in an atmosphere of sound religious and moral training, have a great mission to perform in the shaping of the future of New Zealand.” stated Mr H. E Evans, of Wellington, in addressing the gathering. Mr Evens extended congratulations to those who had won awards and also to those who had not. He went on to refer to difference’ to difference types of pupils and to say a word to each group. “The outlook of usefulness for the educated woman of high character has never been wider than it is today,” said Mr Evans. “It has widened immensely so far in this century, and I believe that it will widen far more before your generation takes up its responsibilities, so great will be her part in the effort which must be made to create a better world. Today, more than ever, is a time of preparation in character and knowledge, and I believe that it has never been more important to prolong the education of girls under the healthy influences of school life than it is today. The. qualities of public spirit, industry, and self-discipline will be encouraged and developed at the most formative and critical stage of life, and those are the qualities which, with the added knowledge gained, our country will most greatly need." Mr Evans proceeded to refer to the tremendous influence which women exerted on the life of the nation, which today was in one of its most critical stages. * A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker on the motion of Mr P. G. Ramsay. After the ceremony many took the opportunity of inspecting the display of work, consisting of needlework, weaving, etc., which was on exhibition in the schoolrooms.
