CARTERTON

RACING CLUB MEETING OF STEWARDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Carterton Racing Club stewards held in the P. & A. Society Room last evening was presided over by the president, Mr W. Howard Booth, there being also present: Messrs W. C. Deller, L. H. Smart, Geo. A. Vincent, J. Johnson, E. J. Matson, J. Brown, P. Bain, V. L. Robinson, R. G. Kemble, P. A. Cole, J. C. Harp ano the newly appointed secretary, Mr IL Mortensen. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs Geo. Eaton ano A. O. Abbott. The chairman extended a hearty welcome to their new secretary, Mi Mortensen. Mr Mortensen thanked the chairman for his good wishes and would do hie best in the interests of the club. Receipts since the last meeting amounted to £9 13s 9d, and accounts, including rates amounting to £73 2< 4d, were passed for payment. Seven new members were elected and one resignation accepted. The Waipukurau Jockey Club wrote asking Carterton Racing Club to gapport them in a resolution to the Minister of Internal Adairs regarding the 1 per cent totalisator tax to the effect that the attention of the Minister be drawn to the difficulties of many country clubs; .and that it be respectfully suggested to him that any Racing Club whose totalisator turnover does not exceed £15,000 be granted the special 1 per cent rebate not granted during the. 1939-40 racing season. It was resolved to support the resolution.

The secretary submitted an estimate for the stakes for the March race meeting amounting to £650, and aiso a programme of races. With one or two minor alterations the programme was approved. The following, officers were appointed in addition to those already approved:—Clerk of scales, Mr W. C. Deller; hon. judge. Mr J. W. Card; timekeeper, Mr E. J. Matson; handicapper, Mr O’Brien; starter, Mr Price; course committee, Messrs W. C. Deller. P. Bain, J. Johnson, A. O. Abbott, J. C. Harp and J. Brown. It was reported Mr G. W. Busby had purchased the right to cut grass for hay from the racing track and from 5 additional acres.

Mr W. C. Deller reported that the course committee had gone into the prospect of the farm realising more profit to the club and that it had beer, decided to have four acres ploughed and sown in crop. This had already been done. The sheep on the farm had been shorn and the wool sold. Mr Booth was thanked for the use of his wool shed for the shearing of sheep and the baling of the wool. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE CHRISTMAS PARTY. The Carterton Women’s Institute held the last ‘meeting for 1940 in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, on Thursday, when there was a good attendance of members and their children who were the guests at a Christmas party. A letter from the secretary of the A.N.A. Club, Wellington, requested assistance in connection with the catering at the weekends when members of the forces were entertained. It was resolved that goods be provided for the club in February next. A fishing pond from which all the children present “caught” a fish in the form of a Christmas gift caused much amusement, after which each child gave an item and then received a paper hat and balloon. Mrs Savill read a letter from a member of His Majesty’s forces at present stationed in Egypt in which thanks were expressed for a parcel received through the local Patriotic Committee. The results of the competitions are as follow: —Christmas novelty: Mrs W. S. Steven, 1; Mrs R. J. Grimmer, 2; Mrs A. Knutson, 3. Mince pies: Mrs R. J. Grimmer, 1; Mrs W. S. Steven, 3; Mrs L. Goodin. 3. Afternoon tea vzas provided, and before dispersing Mrs H. Knutson (president) extended to all members the season's greetings. Comforts for Soldiers. The women’s institutions in and around Carterton since last March have made and sent soldier comforts to the Zone B Committee at Masterton as follows: —48 balaclavas, 110 hussifs, 130 pairs of mittens, 34 scarves, 1 polo-necked pullover. Besides these articles many parcels have been given to soldiers at functions held in Carterton and the outlying districts. It will thus be seen that the district women's institutions are rendering excellent service to the men on active service.
