RAID ON SHEFFIELD
NUMBER OF CASUALTIES THOUGHT AMAZINGLY LOW. WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) LONDON, December 13. Large formation of raiders were continuously over Sheffield last night, causing widespread destruction. Cinemas, shops, stores and houses were destroyed. The total number of killed and wounded is unknown, but casualties are described as amazingly low. Commercial, shopping and residential districts were considerably damaged. Heavy anti-aircraft batteries went into action. The raiders machine-gunned firemen tackling outbreaks of fire in a working-class area. Most of the fires were quickly extinguished. Larger ones burned for some hours. A number of bodies are still under wreckage. Some streets were blocked by debris. A number of time bombs exploded today.
DAY OF IMMUNITY NO BOMBS IN BRITAIN ON THURSDAY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 12.10 p.m.) RUGBY, December 13. An Air Ministry and Ministry of Home Security communique states: “No bombs have been dropped in any area during daylight today.”
