An Uruguayan ship, carrying 380 Jewish refugees, including many children, to Palestine from Bulgaria, broke up in a storm near Istanbul. The ‘refugees were thrown into the sea, with no chance of reaching lifeboats. The captain swam ashore and summoned rescue crews. Children numbering 180 were saved, but many children were drowned.
