NATIONAL SAVINGS
RAPID INCREASE IN NUMBER OF ACCOUNTS. Already the half-million mark has been passed in the National Savings campaign. At the close of business on Saturday, the total had reached £567,872—a valuable contribution to the Dominion’s war effort. Though of the total sum, £378,632 comes from the sale of National Savings Bonds, the amount from investments in the National Savings Accounts, £189,240, is moving ahead rapidly in sympathy with the marked rise in the number of accounts. More and more people are recognising the advantages of helping the war effort through the National Savings Accounts. The rate of progress is impressive, as these figures indicate: — Accounts opened during first six weeks, 9,729. Accounts opened during week ending November 30, 7,205. Accounts opened during week ending December 7, 10,569. This means that 17,774 accounts were opened during the past two weeks as against 9,729 in the first six weeks. Gift coupons present a new aspect of the movement. Designed to serve a dual purpose —a Christmas gift and a donation to the war effort —the gift coupons are on sale at all Post Offices for the modest sum of five shillings. The coupon is in two parts, one of which is used to open a National Savings Account or to augument Ihe balance in an existing account. The remaining part is an attractive reminder of the generosity of the donor and is a permanent souvenir of the part which both giver and receiver have played in this war for freedom.
