CLEMATIS

COOL ROOT RUN REQUIRED. Among the plants of which one can never have too many, the clematis must surely be included. It may be trained over an arch, the posts of a pergola, or allowed to ramble over shrubs or trees. Give clematis what is called a cool root run, that is, a deep soil and some shade for its roots and it is not likely to fail. This lovely climber can be propagated by layering in summer. The shoots are so slender that it is unnecessary to cut a slit or notch in them as is done with the layering of most other shrubs. It is sufficient to select a shoot that can be bent down conveniently, peg it into the ground- and cover with soil; the end of the shoot for a length of ten to twelve inches is left above the ground. Before the shoot is pegged down loosen the soil with a hand fork.
