Fruit, Flowers and Vegetables
WORK- FOR THE WEEK VEGETABLE GARDEN. Onions will be benefited by applications of liquid manure; choose moist weather or water with clear water first. Melons, cucumbers, marrows and pumpkins can still be planted out. Sow more peas and French beans for succession; sow rather deeper for these later crops. Routine work will consist of keeping the crops clean, hoeing between the drills and thinning out. When the shallots have completed their’growth they should be lifted and dried for storing. Sow cabbage, caufiflower and broccoli for winter use. FRUIT GARDEN. Thin out the'surplus growths of raspberries, saving only the strongest. Keep the lateral growths pinched from tomatoes and, when the first fruits have set, give a spray with arsenate of lead to control caterpillar. Stone fruits should be sprayed with lime sulphur, one in 120, to control brown rot. If strawberry runners are to be saved, select those from plants which crop well and are free from disease. Keep the soil free from weeds beneath the fruit trees and bushes. Look over the trees every week so that any pest or disease can be dealt with immediately. z FLOWER GARDEN. Make a sowing of Iceland poppy in a cool position for early .flowering. Liliums showing flower buds should have applications of liquid manure. The budding of roses can be taken in'hand as soon as the stocks are ready. Remove the faded flowers promptly from the rose bushes, cutting back to a good sound bud. Tall-growing plants in the borders should be staked early, while shallow-rooted subjects will repay for mulching with lawn cuttings. As irises pass out of flower ‘they may be (lifted and divided if required.
