Wings of Song. I Wings of Song, winner of two open sprints in a week and unlucky at the start of the other he contested, has 1 apparently at last become genuinely solid. Always gifted with exceptional brilliance, he had' only to acquire this modicum of solidity to take a place among the foremost sprinters in the Dominion. For a period he looked like being a somewhat expensive purchase at the 700 guineas Mr T. A. Duncan paid for him after he had run a couple of minor placings most promisingly as a late two-year-old, even though he did win first two times up in his new owner's colours, including a seven-furlong Trial Stakes at Trentham, but now he has repaid that outlay, for he has earned £9lO in stakes since his sale, and the best part of his career should lie ahead of him. He will do his holiday racing at Manawalu and Marton, and not only should he be worth following at those meetings but he might win a race like the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham next month.
Great Quex Rehandicapped. Mr H. Coyle has rehandicapped Great Quex from 9.8 to 10.3 in the Puketoi Hurdles at the Otaki Maori meeting on Saturday. Belle Cane In Derby. Belle Cane was omitted from the list of horses remaining in the Great Northern Derby after the declaration of first forfeits. Belle Cane is still engaged, and it is expected that she will take her place in the field. . Break for Cheerful Lady., The Gorge Handicap at the Woodville meeting yesterday was spoiled as a contest by Cheerful Lady getting a j break at the start which gave none of her opponents a chance to get near her. Battlegain was the only one ever within striking distance and he was unable to come on in the straight. Squeers ran a good race for third and Hui was fourth. While the initial advantage gave the winner an easy race it looked as if she would have won in any case. N.Z. Champion Stakes. Following the payment of final forfeits for the Champion Stakes at the Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting on December 26, the field is as follows: — New Zealand Champion Stakes, for; three-year-olds, Um: Gold Chief, Salisbury, Gallant Maid, Mighty. Special, Force, Ronald Logan, Shadow Maid..: Festivity, Walter Moore, Ngarimu. Bay, colt by Van Derby—Ayre Bay. gelding by Rey de Oro—Shore Leave. Hard-earned Win. Lambourn improved to win the Gothard Memorial at Woodville yesterday, but he had to work hard to get the verdict after having everything in his favour. Endorsement, with her; weight reduced by a 51b allowance. : made the most of it to make all the running, and as the pace was sound Lambourn was able to settle down just close to her without pulling. Ruatiti was always handy and the issue never looked like being disputed by any other runner till Dynasty appeared l from farther back as they entered the straight. Here Lambourn moved out to challenge Endorsement but he found that the latter was running on solidly and he had to be ridden out to beat her, though in the end he wop well. Dynasty came along on the outer in the run home and was right up in third place, while Ruatiti was a close fourth. These four horses finished well clear of the others, who were headed by Hunting Cat, Cherry Bay, The Ring and Raana, all bunched. The Ring was well back in most of the running and though she made up some ground she was never a possibility. Raana ran a good race for a fresh horse.
Te Ore Returns Big Dividend. Te Ore, one of the outsiders, won the Stewards’ Handicap at Woodville yesterday narrowly from the bracketed pair Laughing Song and City Song, and returned a. win dividend of over half a century. Royal Pageant went out to set a pace that soon had most of the field in difficulties and when he retired three furlongs from home Te Ore took over. She was still in charge half way down the straight when Laughing Song put in an appearance, and in a hard finish Te Ore hung on to win by half a head. City Song, running prominently throughout, was a close third, with Haille Selassie fourth. Titter was right up fifth, and then there was a good gap to the others who were headed by Little Margot and Young Charles. Kobi, the win favourite, received a beautiful run, but failed, and Gay Fox drifted three furlongs from home and then ran very wide making the turn into the straight. Good Sun. Good Sun, winner of the two hurdle events at Feikling, was a long time in opening his account, but. with the race he luckily won at Foxton im September, he has now collected three winning stakes this season for his patient owner-trainer. J. W. Lowe. The difficulty of placing this gelding lias always been that, like most of the Australian Suns, he cannot handle winter going, and when the tracks are firm lie is usually too scratchy to do himself justice. One thing he can do is stay, and as he also jumps very soundly he is a horse who might win a race like the Grand National Hurdles in a year when the going al Riccarton in August is fast, as it so often is.
