EKETAHUNA
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING LAST NIGHT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council was held last evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr W. Olsen). Crs M. W. Priest. D. D. Ryan. E. M. Simmers. K. Marenzi, P. S. Page. The clerk, Mr B. Dinnan, reported as follows: District Fund account, dr £864 16s 2d. rate arrears £405 8s 4d. cemetery arrears £l6 ss. library arrears £1 ss. Accounts amounting to £253 2s were passed for payment. The Fire Brigade applied for its half-yearly grant which was agreed to.
The Eketahuna Boy Scouts were granted permission to use the Domain for training purposes under the usual conditions.
The Wairarapa Hospital Board forwarded a schedule of fees written off by the board, amounting to £2068 Is lOd.
The necessary statutory resolutions in respect to dog registration and the ten per cent additional rate were passed. It was decided to make a collection of rubbish in the borough prior to Christmas, and householders will be notified later when the collection will take place. The present system of sanitation in the borough was discussed fully, all members agreeing that the present conditions were most unsatisfactory. A resolution, moved by Cr Priest and 'seconded by Cr Marenzi, was: “That a committee consisting of three members be formed to go into ways and means of improving the sewerage system of the borough and that it obtain the services of a competent engineer, and to submit to the council at the earliest opportunity its scheme or schemes in their investigation.”—The resolution was carried and the Mayor, Crs. Priest and E. M. Simmers were appointed to investigate the matter. It was decided to extend a welcome to Private Clarkson, who has been invalided from Egypt. A presentation will be made to Private Clarkson. The Ladies’ Patriotic Committee is to be asked to arrange the function. It was decided to call a meeting of the Home Guard Committee immediately for the purpose of making arrangements to enrol members. The clerk stated that only three enrolments had been made to date. As this was the final meeting of the year the Mayor extended to councillors, ' staff and the Press seasonal greetings. Similar greetings were conveyed to Mr and Mrs Olsen. The foreman, Mr S. Daniel, reported on work done during the month as follows: Water service: Two inspections of the intake and sumps were made during the month. On both occasions these were cleaned and are now in good order. A fairly deep hole is scouring in the river bed at the intake, and will be an advantage, should the fine weather being experienced for the past week continue. Sewerage system: No trouble occurred in this system during the month and an inspection was made of the septic tank which appears to be functioning satisfactorily. The weather, proved very unsuitable during the greater part of the month for the extension of the footpath cleaning. The Church Street footpath was cleaned up. and the crossing in Vile Street was cleaned, lengthened and re-set.
BOWLING CARTERTON DEFEATED. Five rinks from the Carterton Club visited the local green during the weekend. The patron and president of the club, Messrs A. H. Herbert and N. P. Williams respectively, welcomed the visitors. The following are the results (Carterton teams mentioned first in each instance): Clarke, Culson, Harrington, Riggs drew with Green, Herbert, Edge, Williams. 16 all; White, Hart, Whyte, Harp, lost to Rowden, Start, Fraser, W. Hooper, 14/24; Compton, Boden, A. Thompson, R. Thompson lost to Richardson, Rigden, F. Hooper, Hornblow, 13/25; Daysh, Nicholson, Stevens. Burr beat Christie, Farrow, Payne, Fredericksen, 18/16; Bassett, Spooner, Harris, Simmonds beat Roberts, Holford, Tolley, Rogers, 23/15; White, Colson, Harrington, R, Thompson beat Utting. Herbert, Edge, Williams, 30/24; Compton, Boden, Riggs, Harris lost to Mountjoy, Rigden. F. Hooper, Hornblow, 19/39; Bassett, Nicholson, A. Thompson, Hart beat Roberts, Holford, Tolley, Rogers, 24/23; Clarke, Spooner, Stevens, Simmonds lost to Bradley, Start, Fraser, W. Hooper, 22/27; Daysh, Hart, Barr, Whyte lost to Christie, Farrow, Payne, Fredericksen, 18/34.
Totals: Eketahuna, 5 wins, 1 drawn, 243 points; Carterton, 4 wins, 1 drawn, 197 points.
Club competitions: Herbert Stars,senior pairs.—Fraser and Rogers beat the holders, Christie and Williams, 22/11.
Owing to showery weather the Oxley Cup match between Eketahuna (holders) and Pahiatua, which was to have been played on Saturday, had to be postponed.
TENNIS PONGAROA CLUB. At the annual meeting of the Pongaroa Tennis Club the following officers were elected for the ensuing season:— Patron. W. E. Davies (re-elected); president, A. M. Theed (re-elected); vice-presidents. T. A. Yeoman and A. H. Russell-Bunn; club captain. F. H. Mayman; secretary, N. G. Kent: treasurer, R. C. Satherlcy; auditor. A. P. Campbell; executive committee. A. H. Russell-Bunn, R. D. McGregor, the Rev L. H. Owen; ladies' committee. Mesdames F. Mayman. P. Donovan, G. Smith and Misses Berry and Smith. Conditions were ideal for the opening of the season on Sunday, when members spent a pleasant time at the courts. The president, Mr A. M. Theed, in a short but appropriate speech, declared the season opened and expressed the wish that members would enjoy a good playing season. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. Personal. The death occurred in the Wellington Hospital on Monday of Derrin Bramlyn, son of Mr and Mrs Albert Judd, of Tone, nt the age of 21 years.
