INTER=CLUB TOURNAMENT MANAWATU BEAT WAIRARAPA. CONTEST AT PALMERSTON NORTH On Saturday eleven teams of Wairarapa bowlers journeyed to Palmerston North, where they were entertained on the Terrace End greens by the Manawatu bowlers. After a light shower in the morning the day broke brilliantly fine, but the greens were holding.
The visitors were welcomed by the president of the Manawatu Centre. Mi J. A. Nash, who led his men in their "Song of Welcome” and a haka, which were greatly appreciated. Feeling reference was made to the sudden death of Mr Robertson, of Gisborne, who was a well known figure in bowling circles, and a minute's silence was observed as a mark of respect. Mr Kells, president of the Terrace End Bowling Club, also extended a welcome to the visitors. Replying on behalf of the visitors, Mr Geo. Hayne, president of the Wairarapa Centre, said how much these visits were looked forward to, and expressed the hope that the friendly relationship between the two centres would long be maintained. The visitors, led by Mr Connell, then gave their song, which embodied many topics of interest relative to these friendly visits. This was followed by three rousing cheers for the Motherland and the men on active service. The ninety-six bowlers then surrounded one of the greens, and at a signal each man drew his bowl on a kitty placed in the middle, Mr J. Hunter, of Masterton, receiving the trophy for the winner. Ninety-six bowls slowly approaching the centre of the green was a very novel sight. In order to allow the visitors to gel into their stride friendly games were played in the morning and resulted as follows: —Lewis, Weller, Hendry, Finlayson (s) Masterton 15 v.
