BOWLING SINGLES COMPETITION. ("Time's-Age" Special.) Although the green was heavy on Saturday a start was made with the first rounds of the singles competition. In the A section Cate beat Burden; Shedden beat Curtis; Brunton bc/.-i Day; Carter beat Connolly; Nightingale beat Kiernan. B section: Skeet beat Peterson; H. R. Feast beat Bockett; Campbell beat McPhee. Playing for the Dennes Medal E. Skeet beat J. Reid. After winning eleven games on end Higginson and Carter were defeated by Dennes and McLeod for the gold bars by 26/20. Curtis and Wallace made a bold bid to win the bars from Dennes and McLeod. On the 20th head the score was 15 all and the challengers were two up when the skips went down to play. With one bowl to play the holders were still one down, but McLeod drove and finished one up.
PIANOFORTE RECITAL AN ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME. A pleasant time was spent at the residence of Mrs T. Gold, L.T.C.L., on Saturday afternoon, when her pupils gave a pianoforte recital to parents and friends. The items were well rendered showing that great progress had been made by the pupils during the year. The programme was as follows: — Betty and Awa Feast, duet, “Maritana;” Effie Dennes, piece, solo; Peggy Smith, group, Graceful Dance Maytime;” Ivan Feast, "Dreaming,” solo; Mary Carter and Joan Ingley, duet, “Spring Song;” Gwenda Ingley. “Cradle Song;” Linda Ingley, solo; Keith Nicholson, “Forest Echoes;” Mary and Zeita McNamara, duet, Galop; Warren Thompson, “Norwegian Dance;” Joan Bouzaid, “Barcarolle;” Mary Carter, “Imaginary Scene;” Toby and Denise Eager, duet; Catherine Bouzaid, “Rondeau;” Joan Ingley, Schubert’s Impromptu;” Awa Feast, “To the Spring;” Linda and Gwenda Ingley, "Polka,” duet; Denise Eager, "Magic Forest,” solo; Mrs Brian Feast, vocal solos, “Trees” and “Shabby old Cabby.”
At the conclusion of the programme Mrs Gold presented Linda Ingley with a prize for having obtained the highest marks in recent examinations. Keith Nicholson was also presented with a prize for the most improved pupil during the year. Awa Feast presented Mrs Gold with a pair of Centennial salad servers from the pupils. Mrs Gold then entertained all present to afternoon tea.
Croquet. The half hour tournament which was to have been held on Saturday afternoon was postponed owing to the weather. Home Guard. The members of the Greytown-Mori-son’s Bush unit of the Home Guard will commence their training on Wednesday evening. A model Vickers ma-chine-gun and rifle aiming rests have been secured for instruction punposes. The question of headquarters for the different units in the case of emergency will also be fully discussed. All members are requested to make every endeavour to be present, by this, they will save the repetition of instructions. Those who have rifles are reminded that they are wanted for this parade. The mounted units will not bring horses. The motor cycle units will parade with their motor cycles. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs S. Shedden, accompanied Miss Betty Shedden, spent the weekend in Wellington. Mr and Mrs Harvey, Wellington, who have been staying with Mr and Mrs Shedden, have left for Pahiatua? Mesdames Souness and Cunningham, of Dunedin, are the guests of Mr and Mrs Nisbet, Kuratawhiti Street. Sergeant J. W. Tate and Private M. Connolly, Trentham. spent the weekend in Greytown. Privates B. Kiernan and W. Hiscox, of the Dannevirke Camp, were home for the weekend.
