RAILWAY TARPAULINS
CAREFUL HANDLING NEEDED. 3 In stating that the exigencies of the ’ international situation demand the utmost effort in the prompt and efficient transport of all classes of goods . throughout New Zealand, the Railways Department stresses the importance of the most extreme care on the part of all concerned in the use and protection ' of railway tarpaulins. ; The vagaries of our New Zealand 1 climate, the Department states, necessitate a much more constant use of tarpaulins than is the case in many other countries. Canvas for the manufacture and repair of these tarpaulins is almost unprocurable today and. consequently, the fullest .use must be made of every available cover in order that the Dominion’s war effort, which relies on the steady employment of all railway transport facilities, may proceed with vigorous and unremitting regularity. The period of a tarpaulin’s utility is affected by the nature of the treatment it receives. Rough handling, the thoughtless deposit of the tarpaulin in wet or muddy places or in positions where it can be trampled underfoot or over-ridden by road vehicles, the use and detention of the cover for other than railway purposes —these and ether depreciatory factors can be avoided with a little thoughtful consideration. The Department appeals to all who handle covered truckloads of goods to exercise every possible care to avoid even the smallest damage to tarpaulins. I
