CONSTABLE ROBERTSON FAREWELL GATHERING. The police officers of the Wairarapa assembled at the Courthouse, Carterton. yesterday afternoon to bid goodbye to Constable Robertson, who has retired from the force on superannuation after 43 years' service. Constable Robertson entered the ranks of the police in Leith, Scotland, in 1897, and on March 27, 1901, joined the South African Mounted Constabulary during the Boer War and served for a period of three years, being discharged at Bloemfontein on March 26, 1904. For his service during that war he received the Queen Victoria South African Medal for meritorious service. After retiring he spent six months in the wilds of Africa on a big game shooting expedition. In 1904 he returned to Leith, and was again sworn in for police service. In May, 1909, he arrived in New Zealand as a police officer and was for nine months at Christchurch. From there he transferred to Rangiora where he was stationed for 10 years. He was in Murchison in 1921, and shortly after the 1929 earthquake was transferred to the new station at Miramar, Wellington. He came to Carterton eight years ago. Sergeant Doggett, of Masterton, said it was with considerable regret that they met to bid farewell to Constable Robertson, who had been a very painstaking and conscientious officer. They were all sorry he was retiring from the force, and that he was leaving the Wairarapa. He hoped that Constable Robertson would have a happy life in retirement with his wife and daughter in Wanganui. On behalf of his fellow officers he asked Constable Robertson to accept a hanging mirror.

Constables A. McLeod and H. McNamara of Featherston, A. Gregor (Greytown), J. G. Gillies (Carterton) and Mr. J. C. Corbishley (Mastertonl spoke in a similar strain. Constable Robertson thanked his fellow officers for their expressions of goodwill and for their splendid gift. Although he had decided to live his retired life in Wanganui he would on occasions return to see his Carterton and Wairarapa friends. *
