ALLEGED SUBVERSION
FOUR MEN CHARGED IN AUCKLAND. REMANDED ON BAIL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Charged with publishing a subversive statement in Auckland yesterday, four men arrested last night appeared in the Police Court today. They were Phillip Leslie Hardcastle, a carpenter, aged 32; Herbert Henry Swann, a carpenter, aged 31; Henry Joseph Herman, a carpenter, aged 39, and Alec Silverman, a cabinetmaker, aged 27. The charge sheet stated that all the men were born in England. DetectiveSergeant Walsh said these men pasted stickers on telegraph poles and other places advising that no more troops should go overseas. Other alleged subversive literature was also found in their possession. The Detective-Ser-geant asked for a remand to December 16. Mr Julius. Hogben asked for bail. The magistrate, Mr Morling, granted, a remand and allowed bail, each accused in his own recognisance for £lOO or equivalent sureties.
