After three days of sharp fighting, the French announed that “reprisals for the Siamese attacks” have been halted* to give the diplomats an opportunity to make a settlement. Native disturbances increased in three provinces in western CochinChina. Twenty native police officers were killed in the south when suppressing disorders. Several French gun-boats have been sent to Hanoi in the face of threatened unrisings in the north. Forty-eight persons were arrested in Tonkin and Annam as Communists.
