NOTED CYCLIST
« EXPERIENCES IN ENGLAND • AND ELSEWHERE. Varied experiences have been the lot of Mr H. K. McKenzie, a noted cyclist, a nephew of Mr and Mrs Frank McKenzie, of Masterton. At present he is attached to the Canadian Air Force for instructional work on aero construction engineering and mechanical and electrical work. Previous to taking up that position he had served on air work with the Royal Air Force and in air raid precautions and first aid work for the London County Council He also assisted in the evacuation of women and children from London. During an air raid on London he was hit by a car and as a result was paralysed for some time af-_ terwards. Following the accident he was given three months leave to go to the United States and Canada. Mr McKenzie also saw considerable service throughout the Great War. He was a corporal in 28 battalions in the Australian forces and a corporal also in the First Anzac Cyclist Battalion and a sergeant in the Australian Pay Staff, serving in Egypt, Gallipoli, France and Belgium. Mr McKenzie is well known as one of the world’s leading cycling writers, as well as a record-making cyclist. His writing embrace all cycling activities, including the trade and sport, and he contributes to cycling papers in England, the United States and Australia and to papers in New Zealand. In August, 1939. he cycled through France, Belgium and Holland. He was at Cologne, Germany, four days before war broke out and then cycled through Luxenbourg to France, proceeding via Rheims and Paris to Dieppe, reaching London 24 hours before war was declared.
