RED CROSS SOCIETY
MASTERTON SUB-CENTRE FINAL MEETING OF YEAR. REPORTS FROM VARIOUS GROUP'S i The final meeting for the year of the Masterton Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society was held on Wednesday, when Mrs Tolhurst presided over a large attendance. Mrs Garland . was appointed to the general committee, she being the Red Cross Society’s representative on the Mayoress’s Patriotic Committee. The meeting confirmed the following recommendation from the executive committee which met on November 27: “That a remit be sent to the Dominion Council meeting asking that in connection with the supplying of hospital requisites and knitted comforts, a quarterly quota of materials and articles required, be allotted to each Centre, as this would greatly facilitate the organising of sewing and knitting groups in the coming year.” In connection with the requirement of a frigidaire for the Red Cross home in Wellington where soldiers from the Great War were still patients, it was decided that a grant of £5 be made from the funds towards the £lOO necessary to purchase and install a frigidaire, it to be understood that any amount raised above the £lOO required for the frigidaire to be retained for the use of the Home.
The knitting group held its final meeting for this year on November 27 and 80 garments were handed in, including hospital pullovers, theatre stockings, bed socks, socks, mittens, balaclavas, and a quantity of children’s garments. There was forwarded to the Wellington Red Cross Society 33 pullovers and 3 waistcoats for hospital requirements. Most of the knitters took wool to knit during the holidays. It is hoped to have a good collection of garments in hand when the knittingcircle resumed in the New Year. Any Red Cross knitters requiring wool may obtain it from the Red Cross Room, Park Street, on Wednesdays or from Mrs Flannery, Cole Street. The sewing group reported: The sewing group held its final meeting meeting for the year on November 29 when a number of garments were finished ready for packing. The convenors will pack early next week, when a large quantity of garments will be forwarded to Wellington for direct shipment to the British Red Cross. We wish to express our gratitude for the many new and repaired garments and materials suitable for remaking which are being sent in to the Red Cross room. As the need for clothing for air raid victims is so urgent we appeal for every garment that can be spared, particularly for all kinds of warm underwear. During the holidays the Red Cross room will be open every Wednesday from 10.30 a.m. till 4.30 p.m. On other days parcels may be left at Kenner’s shop next door.
Mrs Page reported that owing to there being very few soldier patients in hospital at present there was not a great deal of work for the Auxiliary to do. Teas had been provided on Wednesdays and Saturdays and Miss Barnett spoke in appreciation of what the Hospital Auxiliary had done to help towards making soldier inmates in the hospital as comfortable as was possible; also for' supplying transport when required. A grant of £5 was made to Mrs Page for expenditure in connection with hospital work. The next meeting of the Red Cross committee will be held on February 5, 1941. The Red Cross Society is giving its full support to assist with the raising of the £1,000,000 Appeal Fund and members are asked to do all possible to make the children’s party in the Park on Saturday a big success. The Red Cross Society will conduct the cake stall and will be grateful for all contributions to this stall.
