CARTERTON
SCHOOL AFFAIRS MEETING GF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age" Special.) Mr H. J. McKenzie presided ovei the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee held in the schoolhouse last evening. There were also present: Messrs W. E. Knowles (secretary), J. Finn (treasurer), P. Beere, C. K. Goodin, E. 3. Clark, G. Stark, R. Williams and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. An apology for absence was received from Mr A. G. Rabbitts. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £37 19s lid in the General Account and £25 4s lOd credit in the Special Fund. Accounts amounting to £2O 19s ltd were passed for payment. The secretary of the Wellington Education Board wrote enclosing capitation .grants for October and November. The Wellington Education Board wrote agreeing to the use of school buildings in connection with the emergency precautions, subject to permission being granted by school committee.
A letter was received fum the Wellington Education Board stating that the Navy League representative would be allowed admission to schools for half an hour per annum during school time on condition that no canvassing for subscriptions or membership fees be made on school premises at anytime. The Wellington Education Board gave a ruling on the cost of living bonuses as it applied to the school janitors, and it was decided that the chairman and treasurer work out the cost and report to the next meeting of the committee. Replying to correspondence from the secretary of the school committee regarding the employment of a man on the school grounds under Scheme 13, the Education Department wrote stating that it was prepared to grant up to ,£75 for work on the grounds, etc. The matter was left to the chairman to deal with. Notice was received that the school vacation for the summer holidays would be from December 20 till February 3, 1941. The headmaster’s report stated that the annual inspection of the pupils attending the school had been carried out, and that the inspector’s report disclosed a splendid improvement in the work of all the classes. The school’s annual plain and fancy dress ball would be held on Thursday evening next in the King’s Theatre. The children would have the control of the dancing floor from 7 o'clock till 10 o'clock. Adults would then be admitted. Regarding the grass on the school grounds, it was resolved that the matter of disposing of the same be left to the secretary. Matters relative to the dental clinic were discussed by members, and H was resolved that the Carterton Committee pay no more money into the dental clinic fund until a meeting was called to clear the matter up. Messrs H. J. McKenzie, W. E. Knowles, E. B. Clark, P. Beere and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin, were appointed a committee to attend such a meeting. The season’s greetings were conveyed from the headmaster and school staff to the chairman and committeemen. This was reciprocated by the chairman, who also extended similar greetings to members of the committee and to the -“Times-Age” representative. The next meeting will be held on the second Monday in February.
BOWLING CLUB COMPETITIONS. Further club competitions were played last evening, the results being as follows: — Champion singles: Stent defeated Martin, 24/7. Champion pairs: Smith and Underhill (s) beat Aplin and Bain (s), 18/17; Larsen and Barber (s) beat Tucker and Sorensen (s), 23/13; Harris and Simmonds (s) beat Compton and McCarty (S), 29/7; A. Thompson and Riggs (s) beat G. Steven and Whyte (s), 25/12; Spooner and Barr (s) beat Hawker and Hughan (s), 21/15. BOY SCOUTS MONTHLY MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Boy Scout Committee was held in the “Times-Age” Office, Belvedere Street, last evening. Mr W. Morris presiding.' There were also present: Mrs Mellish, Misses Walsh and F. Eagle. Messrs N. Walsh (secretary). C. E. Wnite. A. Patterson, Boden, T. E. Ray, C J. DeLacey and the Scoutmaster (Mr Fairbrother). It was reported that a first aid outm had been purchased for use by Scouts in care of emergency. Accounts amounting to £1 10s were passed for payment. , It was resolved to hold a Father Christmas function in connection with the Scout troop, and that a charg ® admission be made as iollow:-Ovei school age, 9d; school age and under, It was resolved to hold two caid parties and that special prizes be provided in connection therewith. A *ift of a shield for competition among the troop was accepted with thanks. DRUIDS’ LODGE INSTALLATION MEETING. The installation meeting of Totara Lodge was held last night, visitors be-
ing present from other lodges in the district. The District President, Bro. A. Stretton, installed the congratulations of the lodge for the impressive manner in which he carried out the ceremony. At the close of the ceremony, the officers returned thanks for their election. The Social Security Department forwarded £lO 5s sick allowance to two members of Totara Lodge. For services rendered Past Arch. Bro. H. Murrell was presented with a Past Arch, collar and diploma, the District President making the presentation on behalf of the lodge. Favourable reports on sick members were made by the sick visitors, after which £25 17s lOd was passed for payment. ' Invitations to attend Fernleaf Lodge. Greytown, on December 4. and Stonehenge Lodge, Masterton, on December 9, were accepted, several members signifying their intention of attending. To avoid suspension from lodge benefits, members who have not cleared themselves on the books for the November quarter should do so.
Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for November are: Births 10, marriages 5, deaths 2. Personal Items. Miss Betty Spooner visited her parents. Mr and Mrs W. Spooner, Rhodes Street, at the weekend, the occasion being the 21st birthday of Misses Bryan and Betty Spooner, who were twins. Mrs H. Hall, of Wellington, is a visitor to Carterton, being here for the occasion of the 98th birthday of her mother, Mrs Diamond. There died at the Buchanan Home during the weekend Mr Colin Sewell at an age of 74 years. Deceased was a familiar figure in the Carterton and Belvedere districts for many years. In his early days he worked for Messrs W. Booth and Co. He married a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James Turley. His wife predeceased him many years ago. He is survived by two sons, Messrs Stanley (Carterton) and Leonard Sewell (Masterton) and three daughters among whom are Mrs Annie King (Masterton) and Mrs D. Moncrief! (Pahiatua). Mesdames London (Carterton) and W. Waterson (Katikati) are sisters and Messrs Fred (Tauranga), Bert (Cambridge). Ernest (Dannevirke), Frank (Carterton) and John (Belvedere), brothers. Two sisters. Mrs J. J- Cadwallader and W. Bond, predeceased him several years ago The funeral took place at the Clareville Cemetery. The Rev. W. F. Stent, of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, conducted the service.
