LORRAINE SEIZED

DECLARED TO BE PART OF REICH VIOLATION OF EXPLICIT PLEDGES. ATTITUDE OF VICHY GOVERNMEN NOT DISCLOSED. / (By Telegraph —Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) LONDON. December 1. The incorporation of Lorraine in the German Reich was formally declared on Saturday. The Nazis say Lorraine will be renamed Westmark. The 8.8. C. says it is pointed out that the annexation of Lorraine violates a series of explicit pledges given by Hitler. There is no evidence that the Vichy Government has agreed to the seizure of Lorraine, though M. Laval may have done so. Free Frenchmen are determined to recover the province, rejecting a Nazi assertion that the Rhine question has been settled finally. Prior to the seizure, Germany expelled the French population of Lorraine.
