Survivors from the Port Brisbane, which was sunk in the Indian Ocean, when further interviewed today praised the raider's commander and described him variously "a decent bloke" and “a gentleman." He gave them plenty of time to get into the boats and did not fire an unnecessary number of shots at the ship, nor did he interfere with the men after taking to the lifeboats.
