REACTION IN AUSTRALIA NEED SEEN TO TIGHTEN BELT. SOME TALK OF OUTBREAK OF STRIKES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, November 29. Reactions to the record taxation are diverse, but all sections of the community are unanimous that there will have to be a severe “tightening of the belt.” Comment by business and industrial leaders suggested that the new imposts will bear heavily on business generally. Union leaders in Sydney and Melbourne forecast that the new tax proposals will lead to an outbreak of strikes in the New Year. It is explained that compulsory tax deductions apply only on incomes up to .Clooo a year. The New South Wales Assembly has set itself the task of relieving the taxation burden. The Treasurer. Mr Richardson, introduced a Bill on Thursday to reduce by ,C 1.000,000 the wages and unemployment tax which affects over 700,000 persons. The net result to the average wage-earner will be a saving of only about Gd a week. Labour members described the | Bill as an “election stunt."
