NEW TONE

TAKEN BY THE ’NAZIS IN TURKEY VON PAPEN’S ASSURANCES. NO DISTURBANCE OF PEACE IN BALKANS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. November 28. More evidence of Germany’s discomfiture at Mussolini’s failure in Greece and her own difficulties in the Balkans are revealed in a Reuters message from Ankara. This comments on the change of tone of the German Ambassador, Herr von Papen, who, after recently uttering threats to Turkey, has now resorted to soft words, and has expressed the hope that as Germany does not intend to disturb the peace in the Balkans, Turkey should not take any action calculated to upset this state of affairs. The article suggests that Papen would have taken a very different tone had the Italian push into Greece been successful. In the meantime Turkey is proceeding with her precautions. These will extend throughout the winter. The firm attitude of Yugoslavia and Bulgaria toward remaining strictly neutral has also complicated Germany’s position in regard to assisting the Italians in Greece, as there is no land route except by marching through these countries. Germany’s latest attempt to stir up trouble in Bulgaria has been settled by an announcement from Sofia denying that there had been riots in the capital or demands for a change of government.
