The members of the Masterton Hibernian Society met last evening and made a presentation to Bro. L/Cpl. B. Howard who is attached to the military forces, and who is on a visit to Masterton.
Mr A. M. Clark. California, has been offered the position of assistant lecturer in geography at Canterbury University College. Mr R. G. Bowman, a member of the Soil Conservation Service of the United States Department of Agriculture, who has been temporary assistant in geography at the college this year, is unable to remain any longer in New Zealand. Members of the junior eleven of the Old Boys’ Cricket Club met last night to farewell Dr. C. P. Feltham, who will go into camp tomorrow. The president. Mr E. Sortain Smith expressed the team’s regret at Dr. Feltham’s departure, and in wishing him good luck in the Army, conveyed the hope that before very long, he would be back with the club again.
The Government member for Marlborough, Mr Meachen, has been discharged in the meantime from the military forces owing to an ankle injury which he suffered while in camp at Trentham some months ago. Mr Meachen, who served in the last war, enlisted not long after the outbreak of the present war, and had attained the rank of quartermastersergeant when the injury prevented him from going'on with his training. A recent medical examination established that Mr Meachen would be unfit for service for another three months at least, and the likelihood is that he will be permanently unable to return to. military duties.
At the annual conference of the Wellington district branch of the Institute of County Clerks at Palmerston North yesterday, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr J. Hutton (Pahiatua); vice-president, Mr H. H. Hardinge (Featherston); secretary-treasur-er, Mr J. C. D. Mackley (Masterton); auditor, Mr G. Darbyshire (Wanganui); tnree members of executive, Messrs E. W. Eunson (Akitio), A. E. Orgias (Pohangina), and W. L. Hesseltine (Kiwitea). Four new associated members were elected—Misses O. T. Oldfield (Rangitikei County Council), and E. Meredith (Masterton), and Messrs D. E. Fleury (Kiwitea) and L. Stanton (Featherston).
