TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Value of Racing Club to Masterton (BY “THE GRAFTER,”) It is not generally realised by the public of Masterton the commercial value which the Masterton Racing Club is to the town and district of Masterton. Not only does the upkeep of stables at the Opaki Racecourse necessitate the purchase of considerable quantities of feed for the horsesitraining there, but the requirements of those associated with the training establishments run into a substantial amount in the course of the year. Masterton benefits commercially in this connection. Furthermore, a race meeting brings additional population to the town and a considerable amount of money is spent in board, etc., while often the shops benefit by purchases made by visitors. The sum of money which the Masterton Racing Club has been directly or indirectly responsible for bringing into the town of Masterton during the past thirty years must amount to many thousand of pounds. In the circumstances, it is the duty of the residents generally to support the club because of the improvement in the general economic welfare that is brought about ,'by extra employment and the demand for those goods and foodstuffs associated with the conduct of a racing stable. Were the racecourse at Opaki to close down and the Masterton Racing Club go out of existence, the loss.to the town would be very substantial and would be felt in more than one direction.
Amigo. Amigo will not be seen out at the Auckland summer meeting, but will race at Awapuni and probably Marton. He is looking in great heart and has. freshened up well, having been restricted to trotting and cantering work since Trentham. Given a couple of fast gallops, Amigo should be at his best at Christmas. Belle Cane Trains Well. I Belle Cane continues to train on well, and her prospects of adding to her record at Ellerslie look bright. A Big Bettor. Australian bookmakers say that Mr G. Tancred is not like the Italian fleet —he will come out and fight. But the former New Zealander does not fight all the time. He often misses the races unless his brother’s horse or some other of J. T. Jamieson’s string is fancied and in spite of his spectacular operations he refuses to lay odds on. The reason is that some years ago he laid £l2OO to £BOO on Ammon Ra in the A.J.C. St. Leger and saw the Auckland colt pipped on the post. That was 10 years ago. He was caught napping when High Caste and St. Constant dead-heated at Flemington. When he totalled his bets he found that he had bet £3OOO to £2700, and consequently he lost £l5O. High Caste was at odds on when he won the Linlithgow Stakes, but Mr Tancred declined bookmakers’ challenges to bet at their price. It was different in the Fisher Plate, in which High Caste ran away from Beau Vite and Co. Beau Vite was at odds on, Beaulivre at a short price, High Caste at eights, and it is said that Mr Tancred will not stop smiling this side of Christmas.
Gold Nut. Gold Nut was schooled over the hurdles on Wednesday and jumped in his usual proficient style. Yesterday he went a mile in company with Miss Leighon, the latter finishing a shade in front in 1.50. Gold Nut’s rider lost an iron at the bottom of the straight. Gold Nut is to contest the hurdles at Feilding. It will be his first race over the battens, but he should give a good account of himself as he is a fast, clean jumper. Should be in Great Fettle. Globe Trotter is also going on the right way; and should be in great fet* tie for his holiday engagements. Mounts for Feilding. , Keith Chote is to ride Rose Acre. Homily and Ringcraft in their Feilding engagements, but so far no rider has been engaged for Dynasty. 7
