SANDUSKY’S RECORD
SOME NOTABLE PERFORMANCES. It is claimed that only one horse in every eight hundred will do in a race what it does at home. Sandusky is one of them, states a southern writer. Since he began racing when he was two years old he has been first, second, third or fourth on forty occasions.in sixty-one starts. He was first trained by F. J. Smith at Takanini, and at that time raced in the interests of Mr A. G. Downes and his trainer. In his second race, at the Thames Trotting Club's meeting on April 10, 1937, he ran third in a field of horses of all ages. At Palmerston North later in the month, he won his first race, and after recording a second in another event he was brought to Ashburton to contest the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, in which he was beaten by a neck by Two’s Loose, after losing ground through a mix-up at the start. Horse Power was third. In five starts that season his record was one first, two seconds, and a third. At the beginning of the next season F. J. Smith sold his half-share to Mr W. J. Hoskings. During that period Sandusky contested twelve races for two firsts, five seconds, and two thirds, and won £750 in stakes. That season he was second to Refund in the Wellington Stakes, third to Two’s Loose and Ferula in the New Zealand Derby Stakes, second to Horse Power in the Great Northern Derby, and third io Horse Power and Bayard in the New Zealand Futurity Stakes. In the following year he raced on twenty-four occasions for four firsts, four seconds, three thirds, and five .fourths, and his efforts yielded £l5OO in prize-money. As a five-year-old, he started thirteen times for a first, two seconds, two thirds, and two fourths, and £665 in stakes. By this time he had reached too tight a mark for meetings in Auckland, and in February last he joined R. B. Berry's stable at Yaldhurst. In his first start under his new trainer, at Addington at Easter, he Jed all the way to win the Belfast Handicap by two lengths in 4min. 23 3-ssecs. lor the two miles. At the recent carnival at Addington he gave a similar performance by being first out and first home in the Olliver Handicap. During his career he has recorded nine firsts, thirteen seconds, nine thirds, and nine fourths, and has won £3585 in stakes.
