PIRINOA

SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED GATHERING IN MEMORIAL / HALL. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Memorial Hall was well filled on Saturday evening when the local committee held a euchre tourney and dance. In the euchre games Mrs Bragg won the ladies’ prize and Mr J. Barr (Masterton) was the winner of the men’s section. A dinner donated by Mr T. Hume was won by Mr G. Longman. Two boxes of chocolates were won by Mrs Macdonald, Junr., and by Mr F. E. Busch, respectively, while, Miss Judith Spicer won the mystery parcel. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs Frank Booth (Carterton). The dance music was supplied by a local orchestra, while Mr S. Mclntosh acted as M.C. The produce stall, in charge of Mrs D. Mclntosh, was well patronised. During an interval in the dancing Mr A. Linton, on behalf of the residents of the Lower Valley, presented Lance-Corporal Sargent and Private Lovegrove with a wristlet watch each and wished them the best of luck and a safe return. Immediately the presentations were made i the audience sang patriotic airs, and when the presentation to Mr and Mrs Sargent was made the enthusiasm again started with the singing of “The Sergeant-Major.” Both Lance-Corporal Sargent and Private Lovegrove suitably acknowledged the gifts. Lance-Corporal Sargent and Mrs Sargent were the recipients of a presentation by the residents of the district on Saturday evening, and Mr F. Lovegrove, who made the presentation, extended the warmest congratulations to Corporal and Mrs Sargent, who were recently married. He referred to the interest Corporal Sargent had taken in all social activities during his many years residence in the district and he wished them many years of happiness and prosperity.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. The local branch of the Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the Memorial Hall. The president, Mrs Spicer, presided over a fair attendance, including visitors from Masterton. Mesdames Roffe, Gallon and Ross gave various vocal items which were greatly appreciated. There was keen interest in the demonstration given by Mrs Gallon of articles made out of old felt hats. A competition for the best sponge cake was won by Mrs Spicer, with Mrs H. Gaudin second.

The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Lovegrove, Thomas and Atkinson.

W.F.C.A. CUP ROOT GROWING COMPETITION. The handsome cup and miniature presented by the W.F.C.A. Ltd. for competition by the schools in the Wairarapa for root growing crops was won by James Sutton, of the Pirinoa School. The cup was presented to the winner at a recent function by the chairman of the local school committee, Mr S. Mclntosh. The cup last year was won by Sam Sutton, a brother of this year's winner. Caravan Party. Much interest was aroused on Saturday afternoon when a fleet of caravans passed through the district. Good Fishing. The weather was at its best for the weekend and as a result quite a large number of people availed themselves of the pleasant conditions. Several parties were camped along the Palliser Bay road. Shooting parties had a successful time while quite a number had good results at sea-fishing. One party caught no less than 20 conger eels and several other deep sea fish. Flounders were also plentiful at the Lake Ferry and some very good hauls were obtained. The weather last week was most unusual for this time of the year, the temperature being quite wintry. Personal. Mr A. Linton, who was on a visit', to Palmerston North. has returned, home. *• A quiet wedding took place on Saturday, when Miss W. Te Maari. of Kohunui, was married to Mr R. McDonald, youngest son of the late Mr T. McDonald (Kakitanara). who was M.P. for the Southern Maori electorate in Parliament. The couple will reside at Kohunui. Mr R. Guthrie is staying with Mr and Mrs L. Bell. Mr and Mrs Scott, who were staying at the Ferry, have returned to Wellington. Nurse McKenzie, Wellington HospiI tai. is staying with her sister, Mrs S. Oates, after which she will proceed to Rotorua. Mrs D. Tikao is the guest of Mrs Ahipene, South Featherston. The intimation that Nurse Hodges will shortly be leaving the Wairarapa to take up an important position in Otaki was received with the deepest regret by the Natives of the Lower Valley. Nurse Hodges had endeared herself to the Native people by her many kindly actions and by the deep interest she took in their welfare. Although regretting her departure they express the hope that good health and success may attend her in her new appointment. Mr and Mrs J. Barr, who were the | guests of their daughter. Mrs Marshall, I Kaiwaru, have returned to Masterton. Miss McKenzie, who is leaving the district, was made a presentation by members of the local Women's Institute at their recent monthly meeting. Mr W. Lovcgrovo, Auckland, is staying with his brother, Mr F. Lovegrove.

Lance-Corporal Sargent and Mrs Sargent, were the guests of Mr and Mrs S. Mclntosh over the holidays. Mr Trevor Hume has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs J. Phillips and her daughter, Wellington, are staying at their cottage at Lake Ferry. Mr and Mrs J. Riwai were visitors to Feilding over the weekend. Mrs A. Simeon, who was visiting relatives here, has returned to Feilding. It is understood that Mr and Mrs Mcllwraith have disposed of their farm in the South Island and will take up their residence in this district. Private Len Lovegrove. Burnham, is spending his leave with his parents. Mrs E. C. Holmes. Te Hopai. has returned from Wellington. Mrs Stoveley. Palliser Bay. has entered hospital for treatment. She has been indifferent health for some time. Home Guard. A meeting of residents is to be held in the Memorial Hall tonight for the purpose of forming a Home Guard. Mr H. Hardinge. Martinborough, will address the gathering. Tennis Club. The local Tennis Club will hold its annual meeting this week. Judging by the interest taken the season should again be a successful one.
