GUARDSMEN WANTED
PROTECTION OF VITAL POINTS. APPEAL IN THE WAIRARAPA. About sixty men are urgently required from the Central Military District for guard duty at vital points, such as at oil tanks, magazines, etc. Men of 40 to 54 years of age, with up to two children under 16 years, are wanted. The duties are congenial and the men so engaged are entitled to one day’s leave every week and to a fortnight’s annual leave on full pay. Allowances for a wife and children are payable to those with dependents. To men who served during the last war, guard duty provides a further opportunity of service in these times of national emergency. The duties performed by guards are essential and if not carried out by older men must be performed by those who could servo to better advantage in the Territorial Force or Expeditionary Force. It is a fixed principle that the men will not be asked to take up duty beyond a reasonable distance from their homes. Men desiring to serve in this capacity are asked to apply immediately to the Masterton Defence Ofi'ice or in writing direct to the Guard Company, Buckle Street, Wellington. Captain G. F. Vance, of Wellington, visited Mastertbn today in connection with the appeal.
