PROBLEMS IN FRANCE

AGRICULTURAL POSITION DIFFICULT POOR HARVEST & TRANSPORT DISORGANISED. DANGER OF ECONOMIC CATASTROPHE. The French Minister of Agriculture has declared, the 8.8. C. states, that the agricultural position is difficult and that the lack of transport seems impossible to overcome. There is a serious shortage of railway wagons and water transport and road transport are paralysed. Nevertheless huge quantities of cereals must be transported from north to south. The harvest was mediocre in both quality and quantity. The price situation was difficult and if prices rose without measure France would soon be faced with economic catastrophe. The Vichy Government has revealed that the plight of French people driven out of Lorraine is so bad that a movement has been started in unoccupied Franco to collect food and clothing for them.
