Second-Lieutenant A. E. Christian, oi the 36th Survey Battery, N.Z.A., is a present on extended leave in Masterton.

Mr. N. M. McQueen, Wairoa, has been transferred to the stock department of Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., Waipukurau.

Mr J. Robertson, M.P., and Mrs Robertson, have returned from a visit to the South Island. Mr Robertson is now attending the present session of Parliament.

The Rev. H. Edridge, Miramar, has accepted a call by the Hastings Baptist Church, and will assume his new duties early next year. He was in Hastings some years ago.

’Mr John Hopkins. well known theatrical manager, is in Masterton at present making arrangements for the early appearance of Alohalani Hawaiians.

Mr. H. C. Kent, Wellington, has been appointed assistant general manager of the Traders’ Finance Corporation of Australia and the Australian Guarantee Corporation at head office, Sydney, and will leave New Zealand next month.

Mr. G. W. Guthrie, Wellington, was re-elected president of the New Zealand Importers’ Federation at the annual meeting in Wellington yesterday. Messrs. H. G. Thomson. Auckland, and S. F. Aburn, Dunedin, were elected vice-presidents.

Dr. James Hight has decided to relinquish the position of rector of Canterbury University College from January 31 next, it was announced at a meeting of the Canterbury College Council. Dr. Hight will retain the chair of history at the College. Dr. H. G. Denham was elected his successor as rector.

Mr. G. C. Glenn, vice-president of the Wanganui Jockey Club, has been appointed to the executive of the New Zealand Racing Conference to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Lieutenant-Colonel F. K. Turnbull, D. 5.0., M.C., who is on active service overseas. Mr. Glenn has also become a member of the sub-committee of the conference executive.

The death has occurred of Mr. William Scott, aged 79. He had been in poor health for some time. Since his retirement from the position of employers’ representative on the Court of Arbitration on March 31, 1928, he had been engaged as librarian by the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, a post for which his intimate knowledge of industrial matters admirably fitted him. Among the many parties given to Mr. Earl Cross, a well-known and popular Masterton boy, who is at present on leave from camp was one held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. S. O'Connor. Northfold Road. Visitors from Auckland. Wellington and Carterton were present as a tribute to the personal popularity of the guest of honour. Dancing, singing and supper with the usual toasts to wish Mr. Cross a speedy and safe return concluded a happy evening.
