RIFLE SHOOTING
4 MEETING OF WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION MEMBERS’ SERVICES OFFERED TO TRAIN RECRUITS. ALSO RANGES AND EQUIPMENT. At the 45th annual meeting of the Wairarapa Rifle' Association held in Greytown the delegates present were Messrs C. J. Nix (in the chair), W. Johnson, L. G. Benton, K. McKenzie, H. C. Trotman. G. Te Whaiti, V. E. Donald, H. H. Mawley, and J. Bouzaid. The president, Mr Nix, paid an eloquent tribute to the memory of the late secretary. Mr J. B. Bairstow, and the late Mr T. Orr, members standing in silence as a mark of respect. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr J. McKenzie. Senr.; president. Mr C. J. Nix; deputy president. Mr V. E. King. Mr V. E. Donald was appointed representative of the association on the district committee of the Home Guard. The association has offered full cooperation to the movement. It was decided that owing. to lack of ammunition the annual prize meeting be abandoned for this season.
The following resolution was passed at a special general meeting of the Wairarapa- Rifle Association: "(a) That this meeting of representatives of the Wairarapa Rifle Association. and the Wairarapa Miniature Rifle Association offers the services of members.* as expert riflemen, to train recruits in practical rifle shooting." "(b) The rifle associations undertake to supply their respective rifle ranges, equipment and rifles free of cost for this purpose, and are willing to assist in any direction that the Minister of Defence may require." A letter was read from Colonel H. B. Maunsell. Commandant. Tauherenikau Camp, thanking the president, Mr Nix and members of the Rufle Club who had assisted the Tauherenikau Camp by making arrangements for the use of Papawai Range. Colonel Maunsell. asked Mr Nix Jo convey his appreciation to Mr George Te Whaiti and club members for the work they had done and for allowing the use of the club's property. "I think you will agree that accurate rifle shooting is of primary importance in the training of soldiers," Colonel Maunsell added, “and I am extremely glad to have had the opportunity of putting the officers and n.c.o.’s at present in this camp through their range courses at Papawai."
