GALA DAY
WAIRARAPA INTERHOUSE GIRLS’ DISPLAY BIG GATHERING IN MASTERTON PARK. MARCHING. DRILL & SPORTS. All roads led to the Masterton Park yesterday afternoon when a record attendance of spectators from all parts of the Wairarapa and outside centres gathered to witness the Wairarapa Interhouse Association's gala sports day. The weather was brilliantly fine and the beautiful park surroundings were made full use of by picnic parties. Chief interest was centred on the girls' marching contest, which was of a particularly high standard. The bright, attractive uniforms worn by the teams made a striking contrast with the green sward of the Park Oval and the trees bordering it. The programmeopened with a grand march of all the teams, headed by team leaders carrying the banner standards of the houses represented. The teams were then formed up in front of the grandstand and after the Union Jack had been hoisted on a special flagpole on the Oval all present sang the National Anthem and "God Defend New Zealand. The teams then marched individually. Following the marching competition an exhibition of massed drill was given by all the teams. The rhythmic exercises and drill were executed with remarkable precision and met with well merited applause. The Masterton Municipal Band provided the music for the marching and drill display. Included in the many congratulatory telegrams received was an apology for absence from the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry.
The judges for the marching were instructors from the Central Distric. School of Instruction. Trentham, who came to Masterton to judge the competition. They were Sergeant-Major W. Fisher (W.0.1.) and Sergeant F. M. Moore. N.Z.P.S.
"I think the meeting is getting better every year.” commented the' president, Mr L. 8.. Maunsell in congratulating the girls' on their performance. The job of picking the winning team had been difficult for the judges, a fact which was shown by the narrow margins which separated the teams. Mr Maunsell thanked all concerned for their splendid effort. A special train for the convenience of visitors from the South Wairarapa was particularly well patronised. A grand march past of all teams, following an exhibition by the winning team drew well-merited rounds of applause. Appreciative reference was made byseveral members of the executive committee to the untiring work of the secretary, Mr D. Costello and the capable work carried out by Mr J. W. Hayden, organiser of the sports programme. The smooth functioning of the organisation was largely due to their efforts.
The results of the marching competition were:—
Associated Garages .... 46 14 Sixty points was the possible in the aggregate. The winning team was: Misses P. Cody (leader). O. Richards, P. Cody. M. Fergusson, Y. Foster, J. Cairns, V. Palamontain, M. Eastwood. G. Cody and D. Lyttle. Mr Nuttal was the coach. "The standard of the marching was excellent. It was remarkable how well all the teams did without military coaching,” commented the judges. "It would be as well to point out, however. that the girls were inclined to. exaggerate their marching and many swung too much from the hips. The uniforms were most attractive and reflected the greatest possible credit on the girls." Sideshows manned by members ol the Wairarapa R.S.A. did fairly good business, and the patriotic fund will benefit by their efforts. The presentation of the prizes won by competitors in the athletic events was made in Olympic fashion. As each event was completed .the winners mounted a dais on the oval and after a fanfare had sounded were presented with prizes by the president of the association, Mr L. B. Maunsell. The prize for the best turned-out team on parade was won by Cody’s, Hugo and Shearer's were second and Stock and Station third. Miss P. Cretney was selected as the best leader for the second year in succession, Miss P. Cody being runner-up.
