GREYTOWN

SOLDIERS HONOURED SUCCESSFUL GATHERINGS. ("Times-Age’’ Special.) “You have answered the call and the citizens of Greytown are grateful to you.” said the Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) at the Town Hall last evening when several local soldiers on leave were the guests of honour at a social and dance. The hall was packed, there being also present a large party of officers and N.C.O’s. from Tauherenikau. Mr H. G. Carter apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr J. W. Herod, chairman of the local branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Mr J. F. Thompson, on behalf of the Greytown Football Club, extended good wishes to the guests of the evening. Mr Thompson stated that the soldiers were all members of the Greytown Football Club. The Mayoress (Mrs Horton) on behalf of the Citizens’ Committee, presented a diary and fountain pen to Privates D. Te Tau, J. Peterson, M. Connolly, R. Montgomerie and T. i Workman. The music for the’dancing was supplied by Messrs S. Te Tau, C. Morris, C. Mitchell and T. Drysdale. Extras were played by Mesdames Bing (Martinborough) and Drysdale (Greytown). Messrs G. Robinson and S. Shedden were M’s.C. The supper arrangements were in the hands of the ladies’ patriotic committee. The South Wairarapa Working Men’s Club entertained its soldier members on Saturday afternoon. The president, Mr W. Gregg, presented Privates M. Connolly and T. Workman with a money belt each. The Wairarapa Pipers gave several items which were much appreciated. Yesterday afternoon the vice-presi-dent of the Working Men’s Club (Mr G. Burns) presented Private D. Te Tau with a money belt. Mr Burns said that Private Te Tau would be the first Maori member of the club to proceed overseas, and wished him the best of good luck.

Personal Items. Miss Cattanach, of Karori, spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs Gregor. West Street. Mrs G. R. Jury, Papawai, was a weekend visitor to Wellington. Misses J., N. and D. Haigh visited their parents, Mr and Mrs E. Haigh, Main Street, for the weekend. Mr and Mrs D. Molesworth and family, of Wellington, are the guests of Mr and Mrs F. Best, Main Street. Misses E. and T. Best were home for the weekend. The friends of Mrs Hughes, McMaster Street, will be sorry to hear she is indisposed. Miss Josie Dennes, of Wellington, was a weekend visitor to her parents. Mr and Mrs F. Dennes, East Street. Mr E. Thomas and his son. Peter, were visitors to Moroa at the weekend. Miss Christian, of Masterton. is at present attached to the staff of the Greytown District High School. Home Guard. The response to the appeal for citizens to join the Home Guard in Greytown has been most satisfactory. The specialist sections of the mpunteds. motor cyclists , and engineers have proved popular. The local committee will be at the Morison's Bush Hall on Thursday to complete the enrolments in that- district.
