MADE ON HAMBURG SHIPYARDS

On Two Successive Nights LIMITED ENEMY AIR ACTIVITY OVER BRITAIN BOMBER SHOT DOWN OFF DOVER Hamburg’ was again raided by the Royal Air Force on Monday night, the 8.8. C. reports, when the bombers concentrated on shipyards and industrial plants. Boulogne and Wilhelmshaven were also attacked. One British plane did not return. In a raid on Sunday night, the R.A.F. dropped 2,000 incendiary and many tons of explosive bombs on a single target, the huge shipbuilding- yards in Hamburg’. The first planes arrived between 7 and 8 o’clock and they were followed by a second force of raiders at four in the morning. In spite of > clouds, pilots saw the bombs explode with devastating effect. • The attacks were made with several bombers operating at the same time. In and around Hamburg other targets attacked included oil refineries, gas works and chemical works. Enemy attacks over Britain yesterday were made mainly on southern and south-eastern areas. One enemy bomber was shot down off Dover yesterday morning. Several enemy bombers, operating singly or in small formations, crossed the southeast coast, but only one small formation reached the London area and it was promptly turned back by fighters. Shortly before noon some bombs were dropped in Kent and at a few other points'. It is now known that a third enemy bomber was destroyed on Monday night. Enemy long-range guns shelled Dover for three hours yesterday morning. More arrivals in Britain of airmen trained under the Empire air scheme are reported. From now on, increasing numbers of pilots, observers and air gunners trained in all parts of the Commonwealth will be arriving in Britain.
