PATRIOTIC EFFORT
WAIRARAPA BOWLING TOURNEY LARGE SUM OF MONEY RAISED. RESULTS OF MORNING'S PLAY. Representatives from all bowling clubs in the Wairarapa are taking part in a patriotic tournament which is being held on the Masterton and the Park greens today. The weather is perfect and the greens are in capital order. Indications point to the tournament being one of the most successful yet held. The tournament was declared officially opened by the president of the Wairarapa Centre, Mr G. Hayne. who stated that at least half of the bowlers in the Wairarapa district had entered in the tournament. "I wish to thank bowlers for their splendid effort,” said Mr Hayne.
A Union Jack which was auctioned on several occasions and realised several thousand pounds during the last war was laid out on the green and those present were asked to make their contributions. A shower of silver and notes covered the flag. Donations were handed in as follow: Carterton club. £7; Featherston, £1 15s; Greytown, £4 7s 6d; Martinborough £5; Masterton £2l 16s 3d; Uark £22 7s 6d; other donations £8 9s 6d. The sum of £7O 14s 9d was raised and further amounts have yet to come to hand. Thanks were accorded the secretary. Mr H. M. Smith, the grounds committee and all who had assisted in the organising of the effort.
