Heavy and Destructive Attacks on Berlin and Turin MANY OTHER TARGETS EFFECTIVELY BOMBED FURIOUS RAID ON ENGLISH COASTAL TOWN On Saturday night, British bombers struck at both ends of the Axis, Berlin and Turin being heavily bombed. The planes attacking' Berlin concentrated on goods yards and railway stations. At an early stage ten large fires, started in one station, lit up the British planes, though they were flying high. A thousand incendiary and other bombs were dropped on other railway yards. One pilot counted 28 fires in different parts of Berlin. While Berlin was being bombed, other attacks were developed on the Krupp works at Essen, where explosions and fierce fires were started. The latter could be seen twenty miles away. Other targets bombed were at Leipzig, Dortmund, Duisberg'-Euhrort and elsewhere. A number of oil plants and aerodromes were bombed. The bombers which penetrated to Italy began their attack an hour before midnight, concentrating’ on the Fiat engineering works at Turin and the Royal Arsenal. Explosions were caused and fires which could be seen from many miles away. Coastal Command and Fleet Air Arm aircraft attacked enemy marine bases in western and north-western France. Two British aircraft are missing. A town on the south coast of England on Saturday night had its heaviest raid of the war. For several hours German ■ planes rained bombs on churches, schools, cinemas, hotels, shops and dwellings. There were a number of deaths, including those of two firemen. The raiders were met by an intense barrage which prevented them from concentrating on targets. In one cinema 1,500 people sat throughout the raid. Some of the raiders, driven off by gunfire, dropped bombs in half a dozen scattered localities. Elsewhere in Britain, bombs were dropped on Saturday night in a few areas. Damage was slight and there were few casualties. London had a quiet night. Enemy air activity over Britain on Saturday was limited. A few bombs were dropped in Kent. A German bomber was shot down in the Channel by British fighters at midday. There are reports of the destruction of a second German machine over , the Channel. Eleven enemy planes were shot down over Pritain on Saturday. Seven of these were Italian and all of them were shot down by one squadron of fighters. Britain did not lose a single plane. Last night reports from the Kentish coast indicated that the R.A.F. was making a large-scale attack on German invasion ports and long-range gun emplacements on the French coast. The attack began soon after dark. Terrific flashes lit up the sky for more than 20 miles along the coast and it appeared that Calais and Boulogne were receiving the brunt of the attack. It is officially announced that three enemy aircraft were destroyed over Britain yesterday. The first batch of Australian pilots under the Empire air training scheme have graduated from their advanced training and will soon be on active service.
