SAILORS’ STORY
SINKING OF FRENCH SHIP IN ENGAGEMENT OFF DAKAR IN SEPTEMBER. NO OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.1.15 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Letters received by relatives from ratings say the cruiser Australia sank the French destroyer Audaceiux and captured the cruiser Gloire, in a naval engagement off Dakar in September. Both the latter were among the six French warships which escaped through Gibraltar to Dakar a week before General de Gaulle's attempt to land there. A Sydney message slates that the Minister for the Navy (Mr Hughes) confirms the report that the Australia was at Dakar, but has no knowledge of an engagement with French warships.
