ULSTER PREMIER
DEATH OF LORD CRAIGAVON IN OFFICE NEARLY TWENTY YEARS. COMMANDING PERSONALITY. The death has occurred of Lord Craigavon, Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, at the age of 69 years, reports the 8.8. C. The late Lord Craigavon was one of the most commanding figures in public life in Northern Ireland, of which he became its first Premier in 1921, a position he had held ever since. After ( serving in the South African War he entered on a political career, and was elected in 1906 as M.P. (Unionist) for the East Division, County Down, and since 1921 he sat as one of the members of County Down in the House of Commons of Northern Ireland. He was treasurer of his Majesty’s Household, 1916-18, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Pensions, 1919-20, and Parliamentary and Financial Secretary to the Admiralty, 1020-21. A baronetcy was conferred on him in 1918 and on New Year's Day, 1927, he was made a viscount.
