MARTIAL LAW

DECLARED IN TURKEY. LONDON. November 23. A message from Ankara states that the Turkish Foreign Minister, M. Sarajoglu. separately conferred with the British and Greek Ambassadors and then with Herr von Papen for an hour. The Turkish Cabinet has declared martial law in almost all of European Turkey and also in the Asiatic district from Istanbul to Izmit. The decree followed a three-hour meeting, when it was deemed necessary to proclaim martial law for one month in the districts of Istanbul. Kirklareli, Edirne, Tekirdag. Canakkale and Korcacli. The Government forsees possible complications arising from the ItaloGreek war which might affect Turkey,

and Turkey consistently has acted on the principle that it is wise to keep her defence preparations one step ahead of international developments.
