Mr. P. H. Latham, Seatoun, Wellington, is on a visit to Masterton. Sergeant B. Piesse, of Gisborne, was a visitor to Masterton over the weekend. Sergeant E. J. Carle, N.Z.A.S.C., of Trentham Camp was a visitor to Masterton over the weekend. Mr D. E. Wanklyn has been elected chairman of the management committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council. The death of Lord Tryon, formerly, as Major Tryon, British Minister of Pensions on three occasions, and Post-master-General. is reported bv the 8.8. C. The new member of Parliament for Waipawa, Mr C. G. E. Harker, celebrated his birthday on the day on which he was elected. It was also the silver anniversary of his wedding. The engagement is announced of Gretta Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs W. J. Cody, Masterton, to Murray Edward, son of Mr and Mrs F. C. Daniell, Masterton. There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral of the late Mrs J. Campbell, which took place in Masterton on Saturday afternoon. Father N. Moore conducted a service at the residence and also at the graveside. Messrs J. Campbell, M. Hunt, J. West, K. Beech, P. Beech and J. Bibby were the pall-bearers. The funeral of the late Miss Ellen Buckley, of Masterton. took place this morning, the service at St. Patrick's Church and that at the cemetery being conducted by Father N. Moore. There was a large attendance of mourners. Among the wreaths was one from the staff of Messrs Hugo and Shearer. Ltd. The pall-bearers were Private M. E. McMillan, F. E. L. Corry, R. Wallace, J. Connors, J. Hunter and H. Nee.
The death occurred in Palmerston North, after a brief illness, of Mr David Strachan McGregor, Marton, in his sixty-first year. Mr McGregor was born in Wanganui and wad the second son of the late Mr and Mrs J. D. McGregor, Westmere, Wanganui. He served in the South African War in the New Zealand Fourth Reinforcements. After returning to New Zealand he farmed with his father at Te Ruae, Rangiwahia, Feilding, and later took up a block of land at Ohutu, Raetihi. After the death of his father- he managed the family estate at Te Ruae till five years ago. when he retired to Marton on a small farm. Balquhidder. Flight Lieutenant M. V. Blake, a son of Mr C. M. Blake, headmaster of the Heathcote School, Christchurch, has been-made a controller of operations, with the rank of squadron leader. He was nominated from Canterbury University College for a Rhodes Scholarship in 1936 after a distinguished career. He was educated at Southbridge, Christchurch Boys’ High School. Wellington College, and the Southland Boys' High School. He was a champion pole-vaulter in New Zealand and lias been the Royal Air Force champion ever since he joined on a scholarship. Recently he did nine months' relieving work in the Coastal Command, and then a few months as Chief Instructor at an advanced training school of pilots.
