LEAGUE OF NATIONS
MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL CONFERENCE AT LOWER HUTT. RESIGNATION OF SECRETARY. A meeting of the council of the League of Nations Union was held at the residence of Mrs T. R. Barrer yesterday. There were present Mesdames Barrer (in the chair), Dodds, N. Miller, Misses lorns, Tankersley, Messrs Russell. Sykes and Wadhams. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Engstrom. Archdeacon E. J. Rich, the Rev D. McNeur and Mr Esler. The secretary reported that the address by the Rev J. T. Holland had made a deep impression. Its keynote had been the necessity in a new world of discarding old points of view, and of being prepared individually to put into the melting pot of life more than was taken out of it. The annual conference of the New Zealand League of Nations Union will take the form of a summer school to be held at the Frederick Wallis House, Lower ’ Hutt, on January 29 and 30. Miss O. lorns and the Rev Taepa (subject to the latter’s consent) were appointed official delegates. Members or others interested may attend. On the first day the school takes the form of a series of addresses by prominent speakers, followed by discussions. The second day is devoted to the consideration of remits. The Frederick Wallis | House is situated in charming grounds ; and the friendly atmosphere, together with the knowledge and inspiration to be gained, make such a visit well worth while. Miss O. lorns, who represents the League of Nations Union on the .Patriotic Committee, reported that a children’s day was to be hold in the Park on December 7. and members were invited to send in cakes. Is surprise packets, or small parcels (3d or 6d) for the bran tubs.
Mrs Dodds has been appointed secretary in place of Miss M. E. Barrer. who resigned on account of her departure from Masterton. Before leaving Miss Barrer was presented with a cheque and a fountain pen in appreciation of her devoted service over a long period of years. Mr G. R. Sykes stressed the fact that but for Miss Barrer there would have been no League of Nations Union in Masterton. Miss Barrer had started the branch and had been its hon secretary ever since, except during her absence in England, when her place was taken by Miss R. Elliott. Other members spoke highly of Miss Barrer’s work for the League of Nations Union and' on the motion of Mrs Dodds it was decided to forward a letter to her wishing her success and expressing the goodwill of all League of Nations Union members. A letter was received from the Dominion secretary expressing her personal regret at Miss Barrer’s resignation. A discussion as to next year’s activities followed. It was felt that, as the future of the world lies with the young, more efforts should be made to interest them in the problems of world reconstruction. As some of the discussion at conference would centre round the rights and duties of individuals and nations, the secretary was authorised to procure a copy of “The Rights of Man,” by H. G. Wells, for delegates and other members interested to study.
