BRITAIN & RUSSIA
REPLY AWAITED TO PROPOSALS STATEMENT BY VISCOUNT HALIFAX. THE DEGRADATION OF ITALY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, November 21. Viscount Halifax, in the House Lords, said that never before in her long history had the name of Greece stood so high and that of Italy so low. A most significant passage in the Duce’s recent speech was the admission that the war is likely to be a long one. Lord Halifax said little news could be given of M. Molotov’s visit to Berlin and continued: “We made certain proposals for a trade agreement with the Soviet. These are still before the Soviet Government but we have some reason to believe that they are likely to be acceptable. Proposals were also made for a compromise settlement of various questions arising out of the Soviet annexation of certain territories. Having due regard to the existing relations of the two Governments, and to the removing of perhaps some misunderstandings, we made certain proposals that also are designed to establish greater confidence between the two Governments in the political sphere and we are still awaiting a reply.”
