CALL FOR £1,000,000
THE PATRIOTIC APPEAL. “John Bull Calls,” the Masterton office conducting the present drive for the local district’s £B,OOO share of the £1,000,000 to be raised for patriotic purposes, has now completed its arrangements for making contact with all who are willing and able to contribute. The appeal to employers and employees has been well launched and the committee feels that the response will be excellent, judging by the reception given to the canvassers. The next step will be to approach all who are not directly asked as employers or employees. The committee wishes it to be clearly known that it intends to approach’ everyone it possibly can. The few who are overlooked are cordially invited to call at “John Bull Calls,” Perry Street, or ’phone 1715 to make a contribution. Every avenue to raise money will receive the attention of the organisers, who suggest that sports bodies might give for trophies tickets in tjie Art Union for the house and section in Lower Hutt, thus further assisting the cause. Those conducting the appeal would like it widely known that Mrs W. A, Burling, “Khandahar,” Roberts Road, is opening her gardens for inspection to the public on Sunday next, all proceeds to go to the fund. The Children’s Gala Day on December 7 is in the hands of a strong ladies’ committee who solicit assistance with cakes and sweets, etc., and articles for a threepenny dip for children and shilling mystery parcels. Anyone wishing to help in this way should leave offerings at “John Bull Calls,” Perry Street, clearly marking parcels to save a great deal of unwrapping and rewrapping.
GARDEN FOR PUBLIC INSPECTION The beautiful garden of Mrs W. A. Burling, "Khandahar,” Roberts Road, Lansdowne, will be open to the public on Sunday afternoon between 2 and 5 o’clock, when a collection will be taken up in aid of patriotic funds. The garden was opened for public inspection last Saturday and Sunday but on the latter day rain set in about the middle of the afternoon. In spite of that over £2 was collected before the rain started.
