REGENT THEATRE

“THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER” Margaret Sullivan, ’James Stewart and the famed “Ernst Lubitsch touch” contribute equal shares to one of the most delightful entertainments ever filmed, “The Shop Around the Corner,” which will be shown tonight at the Regent Theatre. That Lubitsch is the master of comedy in all its various phases, whether of satire as he so ably demonstrated with his direction of Greta Garbo in “Ninotchka,” or of human, gentle humour in the everyday lives of everyday people, has been proven for all to see in this new picture. It is a pleasure to see Miss Sullavan back on the screen again, and this most charming and talented of actresses is perfectly teamed with Stewart who makes the most of another fine acting opportunity to compare with his great performance in “Mr Smith Goes to Washington.” They are assistants in a little Budapest leather goods and novelty shop, both seeking romance. They look for it outside of their own small world, quarreling constantly, and then discover that they are quarreling because they are in love. Sharing the plaudits with the stars is a flawless cast. Frank Morgan never has appeared to better advantage than in the role of the shop owner. Also effective in supporting roles are Joseph Schildkraut, Felix Bressart, Sara Haden, William Tracy, Inez Courtney, Sarah Edwards, Edwin Maxwell, Charles Halton and Charles Smith.

A superb array of supporting featurettes include the superb camera record of the Melbourne Cup, a delightful Metro Miniature, “Northward Ho,” and a gorgeous all-colour cartoon, “Home on the Range.” The plans are at the shop of Messrs Steele and Bull, and the theatre.
