Probably Seen Last of Race Track. Floodtide, who pulled up lame after working at Takanini recently, has since been an absentee from the track. His trainer, R. Miller, said that a continuance of his present preparation would no doubt cause a permanent breakdown, and this was avoided by his being eased up at once. Floodtide has probably seen the last of the race track after having proved a very fine handicapper, though possibly one of the most unlucky, in that two excursions to Australia ended prematurely through the development of joint troubles, and further preparations have also ended similarly. Floodtide’s most important success was in the Mitchelson Cup, but he was also runner-up in both the Great Northern Derby and St. Leger as a three-year-old, his conqueror on each occasion being Greek Shepherd.

Night Pilot. With the Frank McGrath polish on him, Night Pilot, who has been in Sydney for several months, is due to arrive back at Auckland within the next few days to carry Mrs W. D. Graham’s colours in the Great Northern Derby. The son of Night Raid and Lytup has done very little racing in Australia, but recently showed improved galloping ability, and the experience and travelling should stand him in good stead over the mile and a half Derby course. Speaking of his prospects in the classic, Mrs Graham did not enthuse, but nevertheless, said that, bar accidents. Night Pilot would take his place in the field.

From the Same Stud. Varuna, the brilliant winner of the Spring Nursery Handicap at the C.J.C. meeting is a well-grown colt by Vermeer (by Solario) from Astarth by Chief Ruler from Hyades by Hymettus from Straga by Birkenhead, and was the first living foal of the dam. Astarth is a half-sister to Ammon Ra and to Prodice, dam of Gallio and Te Hero. Hyades was a sister to the well-per-formed Hymestra and Torfrida. Varuna was bred by Mr L. H. Otway at the Trelawney Stud, Cambridge, and was bought by the Awapuni trainer, L. Wilson, at 425 guineas, for his present owner, Mr W. A. lorns, of Martinborough. The runner-up to Varuna, Renarde, was bred by Mr L. S. Otway at the same stud, and is by Foxbridge from Aureola, by Hunting Song from Azure Sky by Kilboy from Golden Sky by San Fran from Fairy Gold by Gold Reef. This youngster is related to Lucullus Lad and Maioha, and comes from the same family as Ammon Ra. Gallio, Te Hero, and Cerne Abbas. Renarde was passed in at the T'rentham sales at 150 guineas, but was later purchased privately for Mrs G. L. Rutherford, of North Canterbury. The Highest and the Lowest.

Most people know that the biggest dividend paid on the totalisator in New Zealand on a single event was £1033 55., collected by the solitary backer of Wairoa Belle at a trotting meeting in Nelson in March, 1930. states a northern writer. Few know the smallest dividend ever paid in New Zealand, probably in the world. This was recorded in the Hokianga Plate at the Bay of Islands meeting on January 16. 1932. In single pool betting. Hawthorn was sent out a five to one favourite in a field of nine starters. He dead-heat-ed for second place with Kai Horomai, the winner being Black Marlin. On the £1 tote, the dividend posted was 55., and on the five shilling tote the dividend was Is.

Erinscourt Re-handicapped. For the Juvenile Handicap, to be run on the first day of the Levin Racing Club's meeting on November 23. Erinscourt has been rehandicapped from 9.4 to 9.9. Gold Nut. Gold Nut-looks all the better for his race on the flat at Bulls. He was schooled over, the hurdles, at Wanganui on Saturday, with P. Jarvis in the saddle and gave a good display of clean jumping. He is to be given a run over hurdles at Feilding. Schooled over Hurdles.

Miss Leighon, a four-year-old mare by Leighon—Rule Britannia, trained by G. Stead, is being schooled over the hurdles at Wanganui. In her early efforts over low obstacles she shaped in promising style, but on Saturday. when tried over higher hurdles she did not take at all kindly to them stopping at each jump. However, sent at each obstacle a second time Miss Leighon showed cleverness in twisting herself over the battens. No doubt she would have done bettor had she had a mate to lead her over.
