CARTERTON
RED CROSS SOCIETY MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) . The monthly committee meeting of the Carterton branch of the Red Cross Society was held in the Borough offices, Mr Taverner being in the chair. There were present Mesdames Cole, Stubbs. Udy, Every. Chennells. Sorensen. H. Knutson. L. J. Fairbrother and Mr C. Callander. The treasurer reported that the following amounts had been received since the last meeting: Mrs R. Bank (cards) £1 15s 9d; Carterton Scout . Committee, £1 13s 6d; Mrs Mortensen’s competition. £5 4s 6d: balance on doll, £4 3s Od; subscriptions. £2 2s 6d. Accounts amounting to 18s 9d were passed for payment. The resignation of Miss Wolters as a vice-president was accepted with regret. The secretary was instructed to write letters to the matro'ns of the Masterton u and Greytown Hospitals thanking them for their assistance in taking twelve candidates for their sixty hours hospital training for V.A.D. certificates, also to Doctor and Mrs R. N. Campbell for the work they are doing in training these candidates. It was reported that
about twelve are next week sitting for their hygiene certificates.. Mrs Mortensen was thanked for having arranged a competition for a bed jacket and donating the amount raised. £5 4s 6d. to the Society. Mr R. T. Reid was thanked for donating wool to the value of £1 which has been knitted into gar - ments for the soldiers by Mrs Lang. The secretary’s action in writing and thanking Mrs C. Sayer for her generosity in giving the committee a handsome canteen of cutlery was endorsed. It was decided to raffle the cutlery as soon as the “Heart to Heart Appeal” terminated. I A letter was received from Headquarters stating that the National War Funds Council was considering the question of allocating a sum of money for relief of ex-soldiers who, since their return to the Dominion from war services, have lost their sight, and it was felt the Society could assist by making contact with any such cases in their district. It was decided to forward the letter , to the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Unless necessity arose it was decided to cancel the December meeting.
LADIES ENTERTAINED A BAND GATHERING. Last evening at the Band Room, Carterton, the members of the ladies’ committee of the Carterton Silver Band were entertained at a social given by Mr W. B. Allen, who has been patron of the band for very many years and who until quite recently, despite the fact that he is over 90 years of age, took his place as an active member of the band. At his age Mr Allen must be the oldest band member in the Dominion. The gathering took the form of card playing and dancing, Messrs; Tom and Gordon Udy playing excellent drtnee music. Members of the band played .two selections very nicely. In the card tournament the prizes were won by Mesdames Te Whaiti and J. Hooper and Messrs Hollings and F. Daysh.
AGRICULTURE CLUB • ANNUAL JUDGING. The annual judging of the Carterton group'of the Agriculture Club will be held in the P. and A. grounds on December 3. At a meeting of the committee held yesterday it was decided th?/ the judging start at 11 o’clock and thatthe order of judging be: Lambs, junior class. Secondary Department class, Shorthorns, Jerseys, Friesians. Ayrshires, A. 0.8. and the yearling class. • The offer of a donation of £1 for a grade yearling class was accepted with thanks and the prizes for this class will be 12s, 5s and 3s. It will be open to a grade calf shown by a boy or girl in the Carterton group last year. The matter of cordials and biscuits for the children was left to the chairman and secretary to deal with. Messrs Fisher and Smith were appointed ring marshals. Mr W. Howard Booth, of Carterton. has consented to judge the lambs and Mr T. U. Wellington, of Lansdowne, the calves. It was decided that a child whose calf or lamb did not secure a prize be given Is. It was reported that the number of calves entered this year was about 80 and there were 40 lambs. This should provide the best display of calves and lambs ever shown in the Wairarapa.
Hail Storm. Carterton last evening experienced a sharp hailstorm for a few minutes, followed by heavy rain. The temperature fell considerably at 6.30 o'clock. Girls’ Club Revue. .The King’s Theatre, Carterton should be packed on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings next when members of the Girls' Club will present to the public a very fine programme, the first part of which will comprise of songs, sketches, tap dancing, etc. In the second part will be presented an Eastern Scene while the third part will be entitled “Wayside Inn.’’ The girls have been practising for a considerable time and have become very proficient in all the items. Half the proceeds will be handed to the “Heart to Heart Appeal" Fund. Seats may be reserved at Mr Wilf. Harry's music store. Personal. Mr. and Mrs. Purcell, of Palmerston I North, who have been in Carterton ’ since the death of Mrs. Purcell's broth-| er. Mr. A. F. Pink, left for Masterton | today and will return home on Mon-' day.
Splendid Crops. Excellent crops of wheat and oats .are to be seen on Mr Geo. E. Allen's property on the main road between Carterton and Masterton. The wheat crop is now on the turn, and given a spell of fine weather should be ready for harvest about Christmas. The crops when threshed should give returns equal to anything yet grown in the district. Dance at Belvedere. The dance held at Belvedere School room last evening was well attended and as a result will provide funds for the entertainment of soldiers leaving the district. The function was an enjoyable one, the music being played lay Mrs. Rogers of Dalefield.’ Much appreciated extras were provided by Miss R. Hopkins and Mr. R. Knowles. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. and Mrs.' Couper. Mr. A. E. Reid was M.C. Two vocal items were given by Miss Yvonne Thomas for which she received well deserved encores. Supper was provided by the ladies of the district. Centennial Celebrations.
The flag is being flown on the Post Office this morning in connection with the separation of New Zealand from New South Wales 100 years ago and the termination of the New Zealand Centennial celebrations.
