NATIONAL SAVINGS

LATEST PROGRESS REPORT. Last week a considerable forward move in the National Savings Campaign was made when it was announced that receipts in National Savings Investment Accounts and from the sale of National Savings Bonds had reached a quarter of a million pounds. The total has now risen to over £330,000 and, with the steady increase apparent from day to day, a valuable addition to our war funds will undoubtedly accrue. On more than one occasion the question has been asked as to whether these moneys are to be used exclusively for war purposes and the answer given has been definitely in the affirmative. The Treasury, which is controlling the scheme, indicates that every penny subscribed, whether from the sale of National Savings Bonds or by deposit in National Savings Accounts, goes direct to the War Expenses Account. In the published accounts each quarter, which are certified by the Controller and Auditor-General, the amount will appear under a separate item and, as all moneys in that account are by law specifically set aside solely for prosecution of the war, the question is thus clarified beyond doubt. The public can therefore rest assured that their contributions are playing a real part in the gigantic struggle in which we are now engaged.
