CRIPPLING BLOWS

AT THE ITALIAN NAVY AND AIR FORCE

PARTICULARS GIVEN BY ADMIRALTY. OPERATIONS IN VARIOUS THEATRES. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.22 a.m.) RUGBY, November 15. During the period November 8 to 13 in the Mediterranean, aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm. besides dealing a crippling blow to the Italian fleet at Taranto, destroyed seven enemy aircraft and damaged two others. Making this announcement an Admiralty communique recalls that last night it was officially announced that fighters of the Fleet Air Arm destroyed four enemy aircraft and damaged one other in the Mediterranean during the period November 8 to 10. The communique continues: “It is now known that a Fulmar aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm shot down two Cant 501 and one Cant 506, which were attempting to shadow the fleet on November 12. The Cant 506 fell in flames close to the fleet. On November 13 a Cant 501, which attempted to shadow the fleet was damaged and chased away by fighters.”

The comparative losses sustained at sea and in the air by the British and the Italians is the subject of authoritative comment in London, where it is pointed out that since Italy entered the war, Britain has lost one light cruiser, the Calypso, one destroyer escort and three submarines in engagements with the Italians. Italy has suffered severe damage to three battleships, lost one cruiser, two others have been damaged and ten destroyers sunk as well as 24 submarines, one submarine depot ship, and one store ship. Two fleet auxiliaries have also been damaged. In the air, Britain has lost 41 aeroplanes, over the Mediterranean and in East Africa, while four Fleet Air Arm machines have also been destroyed. The Italians have lost thirteen aircraft over Britain. In the Mediterranean and East Africa fighting, the R.A.F. havo destroyed 233 Italian aeroplanes in the air and 118 on the ground, while 72 have been damaged. Italian victims to the Navy’s guns and the Fleet Air Arm are not included in these figures.
