A Popular Win. Plutus scored a popular win in the Free for All Handicap at the Metropolitan trots yesterday at Addington. The state of the track and the weather did not help toward fast times and the 2.46 3-5 registered for the mile, and a quarter has been beaten several times. On the tricky track it was an excellent performance. Pot Luck quickly struck the front while in close attendance was Great Jewel, with Lightning Lady, Windsor Lass, Plutus, Blair Athol following. with Colonel Grattan in a bad position. As the field approached the straight Pot Luck was still in the lead, but Great Jewel immediately tackled him, and Parisienne appeared in the picture. Plutus came with a great run in. the straight and the post was reached. He beat a lot of tired horses. Lightning Lady held on gamely and Great Jewel faded toward the end. Colonel Grattan was never well placed and failed to make any showing, while the brilliance of Parisienne did not get her into a place. Pot Luck faded and Fine Art was completely upset by the tricky track.
A Fine Pacing Mare. In scoring a brilliant if narrow victory in the New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington, Marlene, in spite of the report that she was under a cloud, ran true to her best form, registering 4.18 3-5, time that she has only twice bettered.
Her fastest performance was in finishing second to Great Jewel, 4.17 2-5, in the Lelievre Handicap at the last Cup meeting, going 4.17 4-5, while in running third at the Addington Easter meeting to Nell Grattan and Harold Guy in the Papanui Handicap she went 4.18. The win of Marlene in the cup was worth £l3OO and gold cup valued at £lOO. this being her second trophy of the same value, the mare having won the Auckland Trotting Cup last December. Her total earnings to date are £6422, exclusive of the two trophies, and she has proved a great winner for her owner-trainer. C. S. Donald who bred her.
“A Beautiful Result.” “Well, my summing up of the Cup was not altogether correct." said Melbourne's leading bookmaker. Mr Alfred King, after the Melbourne Cup. "But 1 was right in one thing—Beau Vite was beaten out of a place, and I am thankful that he was." Mr King had made a tremendous book on the race, including great risks against th® favourite, Beau Vite, in the belief that that horse would at least be beaten by Historian and Beaulivre. Beau Vite beat both those horses. “No, I will not
say what I have won on the race,” he said, when an inquiry was made, “but I will say this—it was a beautiful result. ’ And the bookmaker turned away to attend to his host of clients for the Cup Steeplechase. One bookmaker reported that he had laid only one bet on the double Beaulivre and Old Rowley. That was £lOO to £1 to a man at Aiice Springs.
A Big Plunge. The Sydney bettor. Mr George Tancred. invested at least £4250 on his brother's horse High Caste, mostly at slight odds on. in the Yan Yean Stakes at Flemington, but when High Caste dead-heated for first with St. Constant Mr Tancred lost on the race. Until right cn the post High Caste seemed a certain winner. After having been hard ridden out of the barrier to take up a position, High Caste galloped so freely that Bartie allowed him to run along, and probably he was in front much sooner than Bartie desired. At al) events High Caste, on the outside, had
his head in front of Con Naru at the half-mile, and he led into the straight by a neck. Judean and Remarc wore handy, and St. Constant was making up ground on the inside. High Casto seemed certain, to win with a furlong to go, but when St. Constant got a run near the rails, on the inside of Con Naru. he finished brilliantly and made a dead-heat for first. In the exciting finish the horses went close together, and E. Bartle, rider of High Caste, entered a protest against St. Constant on the ground of interference near the ( winning post. It was dismissed..
