HEAVY LOSSES
INFLICTED ON ITALIANS IN SUDAN BY TROOPS OPERATING FROM GALLABAT. ENEMY CAMP BOMBARDED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.42 a.m.) RUGBY. November 12. “In the Sudan yesterday,” a Cairo communique states, “our troops, operating from Gallabat, inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy, at little loss to ourselves. Throughout the day our artillery successfully engaged targets in the enemy camp at Metemma, causing a number of fires, including petrol and ration stores. Operations were continued in the Kassala sector.” POSITION CONFUSED POSSESSION OF GALLABAT. (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, November 12. It is authoritatively stated that the situation regarding Gallabat is confused, but it appears that our troops were compelled to leave the fort after an extremely heavy air bombardment. The Italians entered a day later, but the British were reported eastwards of Gallabat on Monday, suggesting that they have re-entered the fort.
